1. What is your name/pen name?
2. What do you write?
Science fiction/space opera
3. Tell us about yourself.
In no particular order of importance or logic, I am:
5. What prompted you to pitch your book in #Pit2Pub?
To be honest, having queried hard and pitched in about four consecutive pitch parties in the year before #Pit2Pub, I was a little query-weary and pitch-weary. But a dear friend DMed to say, “#Pit2Pub is tomorrow. Are you going to pitch?” I replied very maturely, “UGGGGH!” and she responded, “Pitch damn you I loooove your books!” and I said, “UGH! Fine. I luvs the you and I will!”
The moral of that very short story is: surround yourself with awesome friends that are always in your corner and encourage you when you are tired or down.
The pitch that garnered the most attention (6 publishers favorited and requested materials) was this:
Girl is State-trained to kill aliens
But Girl likes aliens
Girl betrays State to save aliens
Girl has galaxy-size problems now
#pit2pub #SF #NA
I’d like to highlight a point about #Pit2Pub: I observed far more overall publisher activity in #Pit2Pub than any other pitch party I had participated in the past two years. The great minds and organizers and producers of #Pit2Pub are doing something very right! I appreciate you so much.
6. Which publisher did you sign with?
The oh-so-awesome Glass House Press!
7. Tell us about your upcoming book.
Outbound is a dystopian novel with heart and humor. It’s set in the year 2415 and is the first book in my science fiction series.
Within its pages, you’ll find:
Really awkward First Contacts
Terrifyingly huggable, malodorous aliens
Histrionics to such a level of magnitude that spaceships explode
Races against the countdown to utter annihilation
Life and death decisions!
Here’s the blurb:
With her prominent facial scar, seventeen-year-old State soldier Taiga Chavez is a reject among rejects in the oh-so-perfect Sol System. She longs to go Outbound, to escape her outcast status, and find her place in the universe. With a demonstration of her loyalty, she impresses her hero and finally earns a mission, but it isn’t the panacea she hoped for. On a planet inhabited by beings straight from a nightmare, and with secrets, lies, betrayal, and torn loyalties at every turn, Taiga’s mettle will be put to the test. The time has come for Taiga to decide: please her hero or become a hero. The only thing at stake? Simply the fate of two worlds and billions of lives. So yeah, no pressure.
8. When is your book scheduled to be released?
9. What is at the top of your bucket list?
To see my daughters safe and happy and fulfilled.
10. Parting words for authors?
You rock. You wake up every day and you create something. That’s phenomenal. You add beauty and art and energy to the world. Your words will help someone someday in a way you may not have even planned. You will enrich their life experience and teach them something new. You will give them comfort in times of pain, a friend in times of loneliness, a laugh when maybe they need it more than anything. You’re amazing and I’m proud to be one small writer in this big, amazing community of creative souls. Also, you rock those flannel pajama pants. Just saying.
