Meagan's problems aren't like every other adolescent's no matter how much she wishes they could be. Hers are worse. They've pulled her down into the depths of a depression that is anything but normal. She begins her pattern of self-harm as her depression threatens to drown her. She starts with one cut that leads to the next, and the next. After starting, it's apparent that there's no stopping, and Meagan spirals into a dark and cruel world she doesn't understand. Meagan cuts to feel better, but that comfort doesn't last long enough, and soon life is worse than it ever was before. While learning to quit cutting Meagan faces life-altering obstacles and grows up in the process. IN THE REARVIEW is a story of pain, loss, confusion, and hope told through Meagan’s poems, journal entries, and a splash of narrative. *About the author: Maria Green currently lives in Minnesota, despite its bitter winters, with her husband. Noser, the author of How to Date Dead Guys. This is her debut book, the first in a series. Let’s get to know the Author segment: KDV: Have you always wanted to be a writer? AMN: No. I've wanted to be many things: a bird, a dentist, an actress, a nurse, a human doctor, a physical therapist, and FINALLY a veterinarian. And now a writer and a mom as well. KDV: Tell me about a vivid or favorite childhood memory? AMN: VIVID: Being dragged down the hall by my arms by two grade school teachers after passing out¾again¾in choir. (I used to pass out a lot when I was young.) FAVORITE: Hand-feeding Jack, the big hunting lab next door that all the other kids were scared of but I adored, all our scraps from supper. Of course, now I know that I could have made him sick with feeding him this rubbish, but he was always so happy to see me. KDV: What character do you see yourself most as and how so? AMN: Susan (Emma's mother's best friend) because I'd love to dress up like Madonna and pretend to be in an 80s rock band. KDV: What was your favorite part of writing How to Date Dead Guys? AMN: I loved Bernard and Claire's love story. The character of Bernard was edited out of a different story I wrote. Losing him was so painful, that bringing him back again (totally different plot line, but the same character at heart) made me fill complete again. I missed him. KDV: What was the hardest? AMN: Changing tenses. I believe I did it two or three times. It's more fun walking barefoot across a mile of broken Legos. KDV: What do you do when you’re not writing? AMN: When am I not writing? Haha. Running, yoga, walking the dogs, hiking, reading, playing with the kids, cleaning up after the kids, cleaning up after the dogs, working as a veterinarian, playing piano, baking cookies, rearranging my closet so it doesn't annoy me, trying to decide whether to cut my hair or grow it out to donate again… Oh, the list is endless. Thanks, Ann. Now about the book and writing: KDV: What inspired you to write How to Date Dead Guys? AMN: A long, late-night drive and a NPR program on the Smiley Face Killers. KDV: Who are Emma’s favorite authors and artists are? AMN: C.S. Lewis, L.M. Montgomery, Cary Grant, and Jim Morrison. She likes dead people. KDV: Describe Emma in the three words. AMN: Book-smart, experience-lean, and stubborn-as-hell. (Does this count?) KDV: Describe your favorite character in three words. AMN: Can't do it. I don't have a favorite character. It's like asking me which of my children I like best. KDV: What inspiration do you draw on when you write scenes? i.e Emma’s home life AMN: Emma's home life possibly came from my husband ordering ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST magazine. The scenes at UWEC came from my experience there as a college student. KDV: What can we look forward to in book two? Any hints? AMN: More witchcraft, more trouble, and more death. KDV: What books, movies or TV shows would you recommend for readers who enjoyed How to Date Dead Guys? Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a must-see. Willow's transformation from bookworm to powerful witch was another source of inspiration for the book. KDV: If you landed a movie deal, who would you cast as Emma, Sam, Mike? AMN: Since I wrote the character Emma Roberts long before I ever knew there was an actress by the same name, I would be delighted if the "real Emma Roberts" was interested. Even higher up on my thrill-me list, would be if Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews played Bernard and Claire, respectively. I would cry hysterically, like a fool, if that were ever to happen. KDV: Are you working on any new projects? AMN: Yes. Book Two: How to DITCH Dead Guys is getting closer to submission stage. I'm super excited about a new YA Dystopian I wrote this year. It's finished and edited, but no one has read the whole thing yet except me. KDV: Any tips for new authors? AMN: Join a writing critique group. Start small. I'm not saying you can't write a book, but try to get an article or short story published first, just to have something to put on your query. KDV: Thank you for taking the time out of your day to answer a few of my questions. Good luck with your future book endevours. I can't wait to follow Emma and her story.
