Q: What inspires you to write?* A: Lots of things can inspire me. A sunset, the ocean (I miss the ocean), watching kids play, a walk in the woods, video games, movies, a good book, the scenery going by on a road trip; all these can trigger an inspiration to write. A good rainstorm or thunder storm really gets my juices flowing. Q: Tell me about your writing process* A: My process is controlled chaos. I start with a general outline, but I never stick with it. I tried to write chronologically but that didn’t work for me. I make notes whenever I have a thought about a scene or character. I write pieces here and there and they sort of merge together. I know the story in my head. It’s just getting it down that is sometimes difficult. Other times it flows like warm honey, sweet and smooth. To finally answer your question, my process isn’t much of a process. Q: For Fiction Writers: Do you listen to or talk to your characters? A: Oh, of course I talk with my characters. They are, after all, the voices in my head. Marabella, my main character even posts on our blog from time to time. Q: Who are your favorite authors?* A: There are so many. Shakespeare, C. S. Lewis, Ann Rice, Terry Goodkind, Christopher Moore, J. R. R. Tolkien, Christopher Paolini, Charlaine Harris, J. K. Rowling…the list goes on. Q: How did you decide how to publish your books?* A: I queried a few publishers and got no responses at all. I was really looking forward to my first rejection letter too. Finally I decided to do it myself. I self-published through Create Space. It was a good experience but there are some things I will do differently for the next book. I learned a lot the first time around. Q: What do you think about the future of book publishing?* A: I believe there will always be a place for the big publishers who publish established authors, celebrities, and serial killers. Indie publishers, self-publishing, and print on demand are for the rest of us. In this digital age, some authors are opting to only publish in the digital format. In the cloud, I suppose we will all live forever. But I love books; the weight of them, the scent, the bookmarks. It’s wonderful to pull an old volume off the shelf and find whatever trash or treasure I used to mark my pages; a letter, a grocery list, a bill, or perhaps an old photo. I may be naïve, but I like to think that books will remain. MARABELLA, DISCOVERING MAGICS is the first in a teen fantasy series. It is available at Amazon.com in paperback and on Kindle.
